Mabreka Cho is born on the route of the exodus. His father, the great warrior magician Leng Cheng-Ho, is a founder member of the guild of Force of Fraternity. Matini Bremmen Kalus Cheng-Lo was named after the other founder members of the guild (Matini Roqvini a Matis, Bremmen Dingle a Tryker, and Kalus Hym a Fyros). The first names were then shortened to Mabreka. These famous homins helped save Leng, his wife, eldest son and two daughters from being devoured by kitins on the route of the exodus. Kalus dies protecting Dexton. |
While out on a banal hunting expedition with Kalus Hym, Dexton is taken at Oflovak's Oasis by Matis bandits who threaten to slit the boy's throat if Kalus doesn't return from Pyr with the ransom money. But Dexton, using his expertise in close combat, suddenly steps into the Matis holding him, throws him over his shoulder and deftly draws the sword from the bandit's sheath in the same movement. Kalus meanwhile, takes care of the other two bandits in the flash of his great axe. While Kalus is congratulating the boy on his presence of mind, another two Matis spring from behind a tree. Dexton bounds to the side of his master with a warning cry. The boy runs through the nearest Matis to him. But Kalus receives a fatal blow in the back before turning on the last enemy with an almighty blow which cuts the bandit asunder. The 13 year old, refusing to leave his dying master to be devoured by the first scavenger to come along, carries the great warrior over the desert plains back to Pyr. Though near to exhaustion, Dexton refuses all help in carrying his beloved master the last steps to the imperial house where the great warrior is able to die in peace and honor. Since the tragedy Dexton has always harbored a smoldering though controlled hatred for the Matis despite Kalus Hym's last words of temperance and fraternity with regard to all the homin peoples. |

At the age of 11 the young prince is allowed to accompany his father who had insisted on giving a royal escort to the Fyros border to a Zoraï contingent which had come to pay their last respects to the fallen Matini Roqvini, the great Matis warrior. In Savage Dunes the young prince's curiosity leads him to an alcove where he is given to believe rare plants can be found. But as he approaches the flowers he finds himself suddenly confronted by three Kipucka Kitins. By chance the great Zoraï warrior, Leng Cheng-Ho is at hand and saves the young prince in extremis but at the cost of his own life. |

During an official visit from the Zoraïs, Dexton, 18, is introduced to Mabreka, an intriguing Zoraï of 13 and protégé of Hoï-Cho, the Grand Sage. Dexton is soon struck by the Zoraï's calm aura and his in-depth knowledge of the Kamis. Mabreka in return is impressed by Dexton's imposing force and knowledge of kitins. Another significant pretext gives them further reason to strike up a friendship: they had both been saved indirectly or directly from death's jaws by Kalus Hym. He immediately rallies a strike force and thunders across Zoraï lands to join forces with the Trykers, despite the Deputy in charge of Tryker operations, Still Wyler, being against Fyros intervention. During his stopover in Zora, Hoï-Cho, then his young friend Mabreka, warns Dexton of the danger of bringing about all out warfare, at a time when the kitins could surface at any moment and so jeopardize the survival of hominity once more. Dexton promises that all bloodshed will be justified, though he will take prisoners if they will willingly lose their honor. |

But during a lull in the battle he takes the opportunity to hunt some of the fauna in Lagoons of Loria, to take back to the Pyr. While passing through Loria Ponds he falls into an ambush and is captured by a Matis tribe, then delivered to King Yasson at a price. News of his capture finds Pyr. The ailing Leanon asks Hoï-Cho to intervene, but the Grand Sage is unable to make the journey. Instead Hoï-Cho sends Mabreka in the name of Leng Cheng-Ho, Mabreka's father who saved the life of Yasson's son at the cost of his own. |

Not discouraged with her experience five years earlier, Ailan decides to scout the Lagoons of Loria for herself, to recreate the famous Band of Loria battling the Matis. She travels from Avendale to Lake Superior and covers most of the south of the region, imagining her heroine, Loria, fighting her guerilla war. When hiding for a big Kirosta in the south of Wind of Muse, she notices a patrol of homins. She decided follow the patrol of the Silt Sculpturers. When the patrol notices the little girl following them, they are amused by her persistence. They decide to pull a little joke on her, and make a little trap to catch her. Ailan runs in fear, and they barely can get a hold of her before she runs into a pair of Ragus. To show that they are friendly they take her to the camp. The tribe loves the little Trykerette, and is amazed what she just had done. To make sure she reaches her home safely, they decide to escort her back to Avendale. Her parents are impressed when their daughter show up with two Silt Sculpturers, but still they give her a good scolding, as she should never has risked her life on her own. |

After a Matis defeat against the Fyros, Yrkanis makes a bid to capture the crown but fails and is thrown into prison. It is Jinovitch himself who allows for the prince's escape to create a pretext to have the prince killed in flight. But the aged Lenardi Bravichi informs the young prince of the ploy and explains that it was really Jinovitch who poisoned his father. Bravichi helps the prince escape. Three days later the old scholar is burnt at the stake under the pretext of heresy. Yrkanis, then 24, vows to avenge the atrocities of his uncle but for the time being is forced to go into hiding with his band of loyal homins. Again he makes his presence felt among the common people where he is able to witness the fear induced by the reign of Jinovitch. Meanwhile, Jinovitch claims he has evidence to convict Yrkanis of heresy and issues a warrant for his immediate arrest. |

Mabreka distinguishes himself in battle alongside Dexton in a campaign to crush a Matis crusade to convert the Fyros lands to Jenaïsm. Meanwhile, in Zora, Fung-Tun has gone insane, the Zora administration is in danger of losing control and guards are posted to keep all foreigners out so creating confusion and conflict at the Fyros frontier. It is thus amid great acclaim that Mabreka returns from Dunes of Exile to calm spirits and with a proposition of a Fyro-Zoraï peace treaty and a pact of alliance in the name of the Kami. Fung-Tun is deposed, Mabreka is elected Grand Sage by the High Council. Mabreka takes the name of Mabreka Cho to rekindle the spirit of the Cho dynasty and faith in Ma-Duk. Mabreka Cho pushes for total commitment to Hoï-Cho's teachings throughout the lands. He misses not an occasion to sow the seeds of faith. |

Yrkanis is finally caught in an ambush. On the way to the Matis capital, renamed Jino, he escapes thanks to his band of hearty homins but this time is given no choice but to leave the Matis lands. To further legitimize his own reign, Jinovitch declares that the 'heretic' prince is dead and offers up the disfigured body of a partisan as proof. Yrkanis is led through the Prime Roots by a Tryker of the Guild of Try then given refuge in Fairhaven by the newly elected governor, Still Wyler, a staunch enemy of the new Matis regime. In Fairhaven, Yrkanis and Wyler plan to muster a force to protect Lagoons of Loria and bring down the Matis dictatorship. |

Yrkanis is required to find refuge in Zora. The Tryker deputies would never accept the presence of a Matis prince in Fairhaven while Governor Wyler is out on a campaign across the lake lands trying to stir up a fighting spirit among the people. Yrkanis strikes an agreement with Mabreka whereby trade would be resumed as soon as the prince recovers the Matis throne. In return the Zoraï Grand Sage agrees to help him pass Matis supporters through the Prime Roots to the jungle lands to build up an army. Yrkanis learns about the Zoraï ways though never once his belief in Jena falters. However he does agree to forbid the persecution of the Kamis in the forest lands once he comes to power. |

Ailan is sent by her parents to the Matis court to learn some manners and diplomacy. Here she acquires a fine understanding of the Matis mentality and a hatred of the protocol and over-elaboration adopted by Jinovitch. She sticks it out for a year and studies hard. On her return she meets Still Wyler who is on his Grand Tour of the Lakelands and who realizing her potential and skills, sends her to Fairhaven, where she leads several campaigns against the hated slavers. Ailan decides not to join the Rangers, but remains on good terms with their leadership, helping out when needed. |

On recognizing the colors of the house of Yasson, and the painted faces of Yrkanis and his followers, the vast majority of Jinovitch's soldiers drop to their knees in recognition of their true born king. Lagoons of Loria is thus taken with only little bloodshed. Jinovitch immediately marches out from the Matis capital with his great army of elite warriors and conscripts to quash the mutiny and confront what he calls the 'false prince'. |
