Installing the Atys Date Displayer (ADD)

What is it and should you care?

Knowing the exact calendar date on Atys is useful for those who like to know what season it is, and when it's about to change, for Prime Roots digging mostly.

Trouble is, it's a bit of a challenge keeping track of it; time passes according to server ticks (a value influenced by downtime, and server tick rate), and is therefore totally independent of a real-world clock. This means there is no magic formula to know what time it is on Atys, other than by extrapolating from the latest server ticks value.

While there is no way to query the server directly for its current tick, Ryzom does query it to display the season and time on the map, and logs that information in a log file in your Ryzom directory. Parsing the log file for that information, and calculating (or rather estimating) Atys time from that bit of info is your best bet to know the Atys date.

Atys Underground displays up-to-date calendar information on their real-time display web page here. Most will be content referring to this page to have a general idea of season change. But Atys underground also provides a live utility, the Atys Date displayer, which brings up a tiny little calendar that can be kept on top of Ryzom while playing. It requires having Java Web Start installed (many machines have it out of the box).

The first time around, you'll have to launch the Atys Date displayer utility from the web page indicated above. If you don't want to have to do that every time, you can create a shortcut from Java Web Start. Locate the Java options in your Control Panels, and click on View temporary files (you might have to enable temporary files in the Settings option to have access to it), then create a shortcut by selecting the Atys Date displayer and clicking on the arrow on top of the dialog. The shortcut is typically sent to your desktop, and may be moved wherever is convenient.

When launched, it shows a tiny blue bar that can be dragged around your screen:

Installation

Note: it's usually best to start the Atys Date Displayer before launching Ryzom, as there is usually a delay due to caching and the tool's time interval between refresh.

Right-clicking on the bar will bring up a menu (note that on some systems, the window loses focus and can sometimes fail to be clickable; if this happens, bring focus to the Stats window of the program). Click on the Setup menu item to bring up the Configuration dialog. Click the "Always on top" option, and enter the path to your client.log file (in your Ryzom directory). The config file location points to the root of your user folder by default, change that to your Ryzom directory. Save, reposition the calendar bar where you like, then close the application (right-click, then close), then restart.

If the season and hour shown on the ADD is the same as that indicated above your map in-game, then you're all set. If it differs, you'll have to wait for the next sync for data to be accurate; might take a while sometimes, but it'll get there eventually.

One last thing: Atys time is different from Silan time. Arispotle time is really not the same as Aniro's. If you switch toons between servers, the tool might take a few moments before displaying proper time.
